3/1/2003 During this past weekend Mike Lawless, carrying a copy of the Bill of Rights
in his pocket and the Fairbanks Bill of Rights Defense Committee's banner on his
sled, won the "Nenana Ice Classic 60 Mile" sled dog race held annually in Nenana, Alaska.
The race trail travels over parts of the original 1925 Diphtheria Serum Run Trail
to the children of Nome, Alaska.
Mike and his team pulled out of the starting point by the Nenana Railroad Station
at 10:00am on a perfect Saturday morning. Mike said he wanted to win this race
for the Bill of Rights.
With unusually warm temperatures in interior Alaska, however, the trails soon
became soft, the dogs were hot and Mike was running fourth. Returning to Nenana
the trail doubles back on itself and each musher encounters head on passes from
returning teams.
Musher Bill Cotter, who was running in first place, lost his team in a portage
on his return pass with another team, which resulted in an imposed 30 minute penalty,
removing him from first place. Two other mushers who had passed Cotter, not stopping
to assist him, were penalized 15 minutes each.
Lawless picked up Cotter, helped him find his team and then made his way to the
finish line winning for the Bill of Rights with a total time of 4:45:55. Thirteen
mushers competed in the 60 mile race for a total purse of $3,900.
